Internship Program at NAFO

This year, the Secretariat welcomed two interns, Yumi Okochi and Martha Astrup, to the NAFO Secretariat.

The first intern of 2016 was Yumi Okochi, who arrived at the NAFO Secretariat for a three-month internship from mid-May to mid-August 2016 from Japan. Prior to the NAFO internship, Yumi was working on Pacific bluefin tuna biological studies at the National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries, Fisheries Research Agency Japan, as an associate researcher. During the course of her internship she had the opportunity to experience the extensive work of NAFO and the NAFO Secretariat, working closely with the Science Team and attending meetings such as the June Scientific Council meeting.

The second NAFO intern for 2016 was Martha Astrup. Martha came to the NAFO Secretariat from Norway for a three-month internship from August to late October 2016. Martha currently works in the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries. During the course of her internship, Martha explored all areas of the Secretariat, working closely with the Fisheries Team and attended the NAFO Annual Meeting.

The NAFO internship program is now accepting applicants for 2017.

Dalhousie University’s Marine Affairs Program

In continuation with the NAFO Secretariat’s relationship with the local academic community, Executive Secretary, Fred Kingston, recently participated in two Marine Affairs Program (MAP) lectures in conjunction with the Dalhousie University program. The MAP aims to teach students about marine management and responsibilities at the graduate level. Mr. Kingston’s first lecture to the group was a brief introductory presentation about NAFO at Dalhousie University and the second lecture allowed the MAP class to visit the Secretariat.

The lectures allowed the students to ask questions regarding NAFO and learn about international ocean governance. Additionally, students have the opportunity to choose NAFO as part of their program’s unpaid internship program.

This year, Travis Aten, from MAP interned at the Secretariat for four weeks over the spring, in fulfillment of the degree requirements for MAP.
